boehner. i think again you are getting arrogance and huborous on the part of the president, who has a hand in this, and i think if he goes off that's a bridge too far for him. if he goes off to hawaii and spends three weeks there, and no deal happens and the fiscal cliff hits and we've got the largest tax increase in history and the markets plummet and he's sitting over there splashing in the surf, i don't think he can do it. >> i wonder what other nations think about us? this is, you know, is it a terrible problem we are going through right now, but we look like we can't handle our own business. we can't talk to each other, we can't figure out our own economics, and i can't think what kind of morale authority do we have in the world when we look so pathetic, so pathetic in terms of how we handle things and the fact that we don't? >> the problem with the american people is today they are -- greta, they are as deeply divided and polarized as we have almost ever been. look what boehner is could

and this is where boehner is running into trouble. do you think they'll eventually put a rate increase on the table? >> they're either going to do that or take us into a very dangerous fiscal situation over the cliff. this is a loosy in the football situation and the president says, i'm not going to kick again until you show me some serious commitment. and keep in mind, this is the republican leadership that supported the $718 billion of savings in medicare that was part of the health care provisions to extend the life of medicare, and then ran against it, as being something that was stealing money from medicare. so it's not even just a matter of putting those ideas on the table, but willing to be consistent about it. but i think what you see right now from the white house is a deadly seriousness about this balance of getting our fiscal house in order, but also making sure we make the investments in the middle class to grow, and they're looking for a partner here. they've got to have a partner who's willing to put some facts on the ta

john boehner still has one to bestow. the man who currently holds the house ethics committee chair is bonner. he said he doesn't want the job this time. but again, how is it going to be a woman? there are no republican women on that committee. so who knows. there have been no republican women on that committee in years. this one might even be more awkward than the last one that john boehner had to go through gyrations to fix. good luck on that, mr. speaker. honestly, the problem that republicans have in trying to appear diverse in their leadership is that they just don't have a deep pool of republican-elected women to choose from. there aren't that many. here's what just happened to make that worse. republicans already had like no women in congress. before this last election out of 241 members of congress, only 24 republicans were women. 24 republicans heading into the last election. after this election, they went down. they went from 24 down to 20. a net loss of four. today that net loss of four became a net loss of five
